Last week, a company paid for a “Wake Up” protest to be held in front of an Apple Store in Sydney Australia. Reports immediately swept the internet that Samsung was behind the campaign. A Samsung-backed Wake Up protest certainly made sense, as Samsung has been very loudly biting at Apple with its “Dude, you’re a barista” and “The next big thing is already here” campaigns, promoting the II and Galaxy Note superphones (respectively). With the III launching later this week, Samsung was the obvious culprit.
But, sometimes, the obvious culprit is not always the right one. Macworld Australia and the Mactalk podcast has uncovered the source code on the Wake Up web page that suggests ailing Research in Motion (RIM) might be behind the campaign. The source code contains a double-click account identifier that when searched on Google returns a ton of pages for RIM’s AU website. This evidence is corroborated by the fact that the man who was at the Apple store to capture the event on video has worked with RIM in various capacities in the past.
As even further evidence that this could be a RIM effort, the Wake Up timer on the site was counting down to July 2, 2012 at 12:30 PDT. An anonymous tip suggested that BlackBerry 10 is set to be unveiled at, you guessed it, 12:30 PM on July 2nd. Of course, take this last one with a huge grain of salt–a heaping, perhaps–as there has been no public information given about a potential BlackBerry 10 release date. We’ll be sure to keep our ears open for the July 2nd date to see what significance it has.
Samsung has publicly denied involvement in the Wake Up campaign, leaving RIM a very plausible candidate. After all, the company is in dire straights, and needs to market the heck out of BlackBerry 10 if it’s ever going to steal the limelight away from the iOS and Android behemoths.
